For decades housebuilding in the UK has been in the grip of a
handful of major developers who have underperformed in the
quantity of homes they are building, and also in their quality
and design. However, there’s another way to deliver new homes
at scale, and that’s to let ordinary people build them. Dedicated
enthusiasts who are passionate about the type of home they want
to live in, and determined to make it happen – and that’s where as a reader of
YourBuild, you come in.
Rhys Denbigh from Facit Homes (page 14) investigates how self-build now
finds itself at the heart of government housing policy, and “is a great way to
create more interesting and appropriate housing, which meets the needs and
desires of customers, rather than a ‘one-size-fits all’ approach”.
Now on the path to creating your dream home, which will hopefully serve
you and your family well for many years to come, there’s no denying that it may
not be a simple process along the way! As such, we have brought together another
issue packed full of top tips, view points and guides to help you avoid some of the
pitfalls which can arise on your self-build journey.
Marcus Jefford from Build Aviator (page 6) provides advice on steering you in
the right direction when it comes to the build costs of a project, while Rachel Pyne
from BuildStore (page 10) explains the different borrowing options available when
building your home.
Elsewhere under the spotlight in the summer issue, CEDIA EMEA (page 18)
explains how to achieve connected home technology for the ultimate smart home,
while Safeguard Europe (page 42) discusses how you can’t be complacent about
flooding, and when new homes are being built in areas at risk, building in line
with ‘water entry’ or ‘water exclusion’ strategies must be taken into consideration.
With summer finally here, it enables us all to do what we love; spend time
outdoors in the sun. And that’s why it’s so important to get your landscaping and
exterior project correct. With this in mind, Talasey Group (page 57) provides
readers with a number of tips for creating low-maintenance landscaping solutions.
Don’t forget to subscribe to YourBuild so you don’t miss out on future guides
and information to help you throughout your project.
