Framing Your build Phase 2 can help to reduce your carbon footprint by as much as 38% in comparison to heating oil. BioLPG has the exact same chemical composition as conventional propane, and is therefore a ‘drop in’ fuel, so any LPG system you install now will require no upgrades or adjustment in the future. There are also a range of other fuel types on the market for rural self-builders. Oil has traditionally been the fuel of choice for rural properties, however, oil-fired boilers come with a number of disadvantages. The storage tanks are often quite large and unsightly, they tend to only be suitable for above-ground installation, and they require a separate cylinder for storing hot water; taking up additional space in your property. Building in a rural area can also come with the concern of fuel theft. Heating oil is easy to target as tanks are quite large, and thieves can simply trespass onto a property, pierce the tank and then siphon off the oil. This can be costly, as you’ll have to repair or replace the tank, as well as replace the oil. Air Source Heat Pumps For rural self-builders looking for a renewable option, Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are often a popular choice. Proven to be successful in some off-grid installations, ASHPs utilise the heat from the outside air, which is then pumped into the property to provide heating and hot water, via a separate cylinder system. While ASHPs are a great environmentally– friendly technology, they can be quite costly to purchase and require fairly specialist installation, which can add further expense. They also need to be controlled accurately to deliver the efficiencies required. Electric Electric boilers are also available, but they can often be expensive to run. You may be forced to use a specialist tariff to control costs – on average it’s two to three times more expensive to heat a home using electricity than oil or LPG. Although there are various options available to rural self-builders when choosing a new boiler and heating system, the many advantages of LPG and the fact Calor now offers exclusive renewable BioLPG, make it a clear favourite for off-grid self-build projects across the UK.
