Your Build - Spring 2018

Framing Your build Phase 2 Spring 2018 49 and modern schemes. Its versatility means it can be used for a variety of projects – and is equally suited for newbuilds, as it is for updating existing properties. A self-builder should consider using fibre cement cladding for a number of reasons. Firstly, it offers great value for money as it is a hardwearing product that can perform well over a long period of time. It can be used as a complete rainscreen cladding solution, a decorative façade, an infill panel, or as a soffit board. One of the reasons for its versatility is its excellent chemical and fire resistance, as well as excellent impermeability to moisture – a quality which can protect from rot and fungi during the lifetime of the board. Fibre cement is also unaffected by the climatic conditions it might be subject to, and it has proven colour stability, despite long-term exposure to UV and sunlight. What this means, in short, for the self-builder and homeowner, is that fibre cement cladding requires very little maintenance over its lifetime. Supply For the self-builder, it is always important to work with a reliable supplier of cladding products. A good supplier will be able to offer advice and guidance on the best products to use, depending on the type of build being undertaken. Also, specialist companies such as Marco Industries, Cembrit’s chosen partner, will be able to offer a full range of accessories, painting services if required, as well as delivery of the finished product. One of our most popular self-build products available through Marco is our Plank weatherboard product. Textured Plank is a wood effect cladding designed to replicate the look of traditional timber weatherboard. It offers a hardwearing and fire-resistant alternative to timber cladding, but with all the aesthetic appeal of real wood. Plank is a long-lasting replacement to worn out timber or artificial looking plastic cladding. It has a textured appearance and is available in 14 colours or primed for on-site painting. It also comes complete with a 15-year warranty. www.cembrit.co.uk Self-builders and homeowners, Effie and Peter Antoniou, saved time and money by opting to install Plank cladding, at their garden summer house situated in South East London. More than 40m² pre-coloured Plank was installed on the new building, which was built to a bespoke design by the homeowners. They opted for a light green colour, which complements the dark grey of the building’s bi-fold doors and windows, and blends in perfectly with the garden setting. “We chose to use Plank cladding on our project because of the modern appeal of the finish and it has certainly produced an effect very pleasing to the eye,” said Effie Antoniou. “We were impressed with the design quality and the durability of the product. Cembrit also provided extremely useful technical advice during the build, which was a great added benefit. We are pleased with both the product and service – so much so, that we’ve recommended the product to several people since the build.” The Plank cladding has provided a contemporary, wood-effect finish to the summer house and shows what a great alternative to timber it can be. The colour also blends nicely with the Cembrit slates also used on the building.
