Your Build - Spring 2018

Self-build process Build Aviator within your home. General building materials may satisfy acoustic regulations, but that doesn’t mean they’ll satisfy your own housing requirements. Let’s put this into context, if you’ve got surround sound, you could well be hitting a sound-pressure level of 110dB, meaning that 40dB insulation won’t be enough to prevent the person in the room next door, or below from getting a little irritated. Ultimately, a self-build is a home fi rst and an investment second. When you’ve spent years (in most cases) creating your dream house, you want it to be perfect, and certainly don’t want to be investing more time and expense a few months down the line on measures to improve sound fl anking. What’s the solution? As with any other area of a house, the level of performance is a refl ection of the materials specifi ed. It’s not just the materials within the 8 A s with a ny oth er a rea of a h ou se, th e lev el of house structure that need to be considered though, products used within the building, such as ventilation or hot water pumps can emit noise disturbances. Look for products that have a low dB or ones identifi ed as silent. Special acoustic insulation can be purchased, but the same level of soundproofi ng can often be achieved through adding mass or isolation, and using careful detailing, to ensure there are no voids in walls or fl oors, where sound could easily pass through. With the myriad of considerations that the designer needs to factor in, special sound insulation measures can go amiss. So often the simplest solution can be to get a fresh pair of eyes on things. An acoustic desktop study will interrogate your designs for any sound issues, recommending measures for improvements, and in some cases specifi c material alterations that could mean the difference between serenity and pandemonium. The Build Aviator desktop study has been created in partnership with Local Authority Building Control Acoustics, and will assess the design teams’ drawings and material specifi cation, assisting self-builders to go beyond minimum requirements and achieve internal sound standards that meet specifi c housing needs.
